I had to explain about the greatness of Thiruvannaamalai to a non-Thamizh. This is a part of what i wrote to him:
The name Annaamalai has several meanings:
- Annaa + Malai - The great mountain
- Annaa + Malai - The great man
- Annaa + Malai - The great war.
Thiru Idaikkaattu Siddhar must have strived very hard to attain Realisation. Hence, the great war / man. A towering man.
- Annaa + Malai - Look up. Be stunned.
The moment you lookup, your mind subsides for a moment. If you are mature enough to know which is you and which is your mind, you can attain Realisation immediately. Since this technique is very easy and effective, the discoverer of this technique (Siddhar) is hailed as a great one.
Sadhguru's (Isha) Aadhiyogi statue is a pictorial representation of this technique.
Thiruvannaamalai is famous for another technique: Thinking of your Self sets you free (நினைக்க முக்தி தரும் அண்ணாமலை).
Thinking of one's Self is not an act. It's Being. The moment you think of your Self, you are in your natural state.
This technique could also be the reason why the Siddhar is hailed as a great one / man / mountain. It's a super easy technique.
