Vasco da Gama had recorded in his diary that upon his arrival at Zanzibar in Africa he saw a docked ship three times bigger than his own. He took an African interpreter to meet the owner of that ship *#Chandan*, a Gujarati trader who used to bring pine wood and teak from India along with spices and take back diamonds to Cochin. Vasco da Gama followed Chandan to reach the shores of India, a fact very few in independent India know about.
Venetian trader and explorer #Marco #Polo, as early as 13th century, had recounted that ships in India had double boards which were joined together with strong nail and crevices, filled with special kind of gum and were so huge that 300 boatmen were needed to row them. These vessels could take a load of 3000 to 4000 gunny bags having small rooms and arrangements for comfort. Additional layers were added to the bottom, when it gets damaged. Some ships had as many as six layers, the book says. In the 15th century another traveller #Nicolo #Conti found Indian ships were much bigger than their own ships and their bases were made of three boards to weather formidable storms. Some ships were built in a such a manner that if one part was damaged, the rest could substitute for it. Another traveller #Berthma had written how wooden boards were joined to prevent even a drop of water seeping into the ship and that it would take eight days to come to Iran from Cape Comorin (Kanyakumari), the book records.
Until the 17th century, European ships were a maximum of 600 tonnes. But in India, they saw such big ships as the Gogha which were more than 1500 tonnes.The European companies started using these ships and opened many new factories to make Indian artisans manufacture ships.
In 1811, Lt. Walker writes, The ships in the British fleet had to be repaired every 12th year. But the Indian ships made of teak would function for more than 50 years, without any repair.
The #East #India #Company had a ship called Dariya Daulat which worked for 87 years without any repairs. Durable woods, like rosewood, sal and teak were used for this purpose.
French traveller #Waltzer #Salvins writes, in his book Le Hindu in 1811 AD, Indians were in the forefront in the art of ship-building and even today, they can teach a lesson or two to the Europeans. The British, who were very apt at learning the arts, learnt a lot of things about ship building from the Indians. There is a very good blend of beauty and utility in Indian ships and they are examples of Indian handicrafts and their patience.
Between 1786 and 1863, 300 ships were built at factories in Mumbai. Many of them were included in the Royal fleet. Of these, the ship called Asia was 2289 tonnes and had 84 cannons.
Ship building factories were set up in Hoogly, Silhat, Chittagong, Dacca, etc.
In the period between 1781 to 1821, in Hoogly alone 272 ships were manufactured which together weighed 122,693 tonnes.
Ancient Romans and Greeks had trade contacts with India through sea. #Thamizhs were the best sea-fairers in the world. In fact, that race's name suggests that "they returned from sea"!! Once upon a time, this skill was looked upon with awe. Then how apt is to credit #Vasco #da #gama as founder of sea route to India? 😉

(There are two theories about universe in Hindhuism - #Shristi-Dhristi & #Dhristi-Shristi. According to the first one, whatever is happening in this world is linear - big bang, stars are born, planets are born, life starts. According to the second one, what we see is a projection of our own mind. There is no universe apart from ourselves. #Bhagavaan #Shree #Ramanaa says "நாம் உலகம் காண்டலால்..." ("Because we see the world...") in His great work "உள்ளது நாற்பது" (Reality in forty verses). The above passage talk about the latter.
It's only because our ancestors knew about "mind over matter", they composed the following famous & great Vedic mantra:
"Aano bhadra krtavo yantu vishwatah'' (1.89.1 #Rigveda)
"Let noble thoughts come to me from all directions”
Part of our death rituals & Shraddha rituals are concerned about nullifying/destroying/pacifying the effects of thoughts of the deceased person.)

Her brother ran a finger down the long shelf of cracked leather bindings and old dusty tomes. “The scientific wisdom of the ancients was staggering . . . modern physics is only now beginning to comprehend it all.”
“Peter,” she said, “you already told me that the Egyptians understood levers and pulleys long before Newton, and that the early alchemists did work on a par with modern chemistry, but so what? Today’s physics deals with concepts that would have been unimaginable to the ancients.”
“Like what?”
“Well . . . like entanglement theory, for one!” Subatomic research had now proven categorically that all matter was interconnected . . . entangled in a single unified mesh . . . a kind of universal oneness. “You’re telling me the ancients sat around discussing entanglement theory?”
“Absolutely!” Peter said, pushing his long, dark bangs out of his eyes. “Entanglement was at the core of primeval beliefs. Its names are as old as history itself . . . *Dharmakaya, Tao, Brahman*. In fact, man’s oldest spiritual quest was to perceive his own entanglement, to sense his own interconnection with all things. He has always wanted to become ‘one’ with the universe . . . to achieve the state of ‘at-one-ment.’ ” Her brother raised his eyebrows. “To this day, Jews and Christians still strive for ‘atonement’ . . . although most of us have forgotten it is actually ‘at-one-ment’ we’re seeking.”
Katherine sighed, having forgotten how hard it was to argue with a man so well versed in history. “Okay, but you’re talking in generalities. I’m talking specific physics.”
“Then be specific.” His keen eyes challenged her now. “Okay, how about something as simple as polarity—the positive/negative balance of the subatomic realm. Obviously, the ancients didn’t underst—”
“Hold on!” Her brother pulled down a large dusty text, which he dropped loudly on the library table. *“Modern polarity is nothing but the ‘dual world’ described by Krishna here in the Bhagavad Gita over two thousand years ago. A dozen other books in here, including the Kybalion, talk about binary systems and the opposing forces in nature.”*
(2000 years is plain wrong. Lord Krishnar lived some 5000 years ago.)
Katherine was skeptical. “Okay, but if we talk about modern discoveries in subatomics—the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, for example—”
“Then we must look here,” Peter said, striding down his long bookshelf and pulling out another text. *“The sacred Hindu Vendantic scriptures known as the Upanishads.”* He dropped the tome heavily on the first. *“Heisenberg and Schrödinger studied this text and credited it with helping them formulate some of their theories.”*

ஒரு கிராமத்தைக் காக்க 120 இந்திய வீரர்கள் 5000 சீன வீரர்களை எதிர்த்து சண்டையிட்டு 1300க்கும் அதிகமானவர்களை கொன்று குவித்ததை அறிவோமா?

The Battle of Rezang La
அது ஜம்மு காஷ்மீரில் உள்ள ஒரு மலைப் பிரதேசம். சீன எல்லைக்கு சில கிலோமீட்டர்கள் தொலைவில் இருந்தது அந்த கிராமம். பெயர் சுசுல் (Chushul). பனி மூடிய மலைகளால் சூழப்பட்ட அழகான அமைதியான கிராமம் சுசுல்.
நவம்பர் 18, 1962...
பலத்த துப்பாக்கி ஓசைகளுடன் தான் அந்தக் கிராமத்தின் விடியல் ஆரம்பித்திருந்தது. அன்று அங்கிருந்த இராணுவ முகாமில் 120 இந்திய இராணுவ வீரர்கள் முகாமிட்டிருந்தனர். அன்று பனியின் தாக்கம் சற்று அதிகமாகவே இருந்தது. அதிகாலை 3.30 மணி அளவில் சீன இராணுவத்தினர் எவ்வித முன்னறிவிப்பும் இன்றி தாக்கத் தொடங்கினர்.
இந்திய இராணுவத்தினர் பதில் தாக்குதலுக்கு தயாரான போது நிலைமை தெளிவாக தெரிந்தது. சுமார் 5000க்கும் மேற்பட்ட எதிரிகள் தங்களை தாக்குவதை அறிந்தனர். 120 பேரில் Major Shaitan Singhம் ஒருவர். அவரே அந்த இராணுவ முகாமின் தலைவர். அவர் இக்கட்டான சூழ்நிலையில் இருந்தார். அவருக்கு இரண்டு வழிகள் மட்டுமே இருந்தன:
1. கிராமத்தை கைவிட்டு வெளியேறுவது
2. எதிர்த்து போரிட்டு வீரமரணம் அடைவது
இரண்டாவது வழியை தேர்ந்தெடுத்தார் அவர்.
இந்திய படைகளிடம் .22, .303 போன்ற சிறிய ரக ரைபில்களும் சில கையெறி குண்டுகளும் மட்டுமே இருந்தன. சீன இராணுவத்தினர் 7.62 Self Loading Rifle, Light Machine Gun போன்ற இயந்திர துப்பாக்கிகளை வைத்திருந்தனர். போரிடுவது தற்கொலைக்குச் சமம் என்பதை முன்னரே அறிந்திருந்தனர் அனைவரும். மலைப்பாங்கான பிரதேசத்தில் போரிடுவதற்கான வியூகம் உடனே வகுக்கப்பட்டது.
சீன இராணுவத்தினரின் முதல் படை இந்திய எல்லைக்குள் வந்தது. 120 இந்திய வீரர்கள் தங்களை எதிர்த்துப் போரிடுவார்கள் என்பதை அவர்கள் எதிர்பார்த்திருக்கவில்லை.
கொட்டும் பனிக்கு நடுவே தோட்டாக்கள் சீறிப்பாய்ந்தன. பல உடல்கள் மண்ணில் சரிந்தன. அவற்றில் பெரும்பாலானவை சீன இராணுவத்தினருடையது. சீனாவின் முதல் படைத் தோல்வியை கண்டது.
இரண்டாம் படை களத்திற்கு இயந்திர, கனரக துப்பாக்கிகளுடன் விரைந்தது. அதற்கும் அதே நிலைமை தான். இந்திய வீரர்களின் ஆக்ரோஷமான போரால் மீண்டும் தோல்வியைத் தழுவினர்.
முழு மூச்சாக சீனா தனது மூன்றாவது படையை இறக்கியது. இந்த முறை இந்திய வீரர்களிடம் ஆயுதங்கள் தீர்ந்து போயிருந்தன. அனைத்து தோட்டாக்களும் காலி ஆகி இருந்தன. அதனாலென்ன? உடலில் உயிர் இருக்கிறதே! ஒவ்வொரு இராணுவ வீரரும் மலைச்சரிவுகளில் பதுங்கி இருந்து வெறும் கைகளால் சீன படைகளை துவம்சம் செய்தனர். சிலர் துப்பாக்கியை மாற்றி பிடித்து சரமாரியாக எதிரிகளைத் தாக்கினர்.
போரில் உயிர் பிழைத்த ராம்சந்தர் கூறும் போது, "என்னுடைய சக இராணுவ வீரர் ராம் சிங் என்பவர் குத்துச்சண்டை வீரர். என் கண்முன்னே பல சீன இராணுவத்தினரை அடித்துக்கொன்றார். இறுதியில் தலையில் குண்டடி பட்டு இறந்தார்" என்று பேட்டி கொடுத்துள்ளார்.
எல்லையைக் காத்த 120 இராணுவ வீரர்களும் சேர்ந்து 1300 சீன இராணுவத்தினரை கொன்று குவித்தனர். 114 வீரர்கள் தங்கள் உடலில் இறுதி அசைவிருக்கும் வரை, போராடி வீர மரணத்தை தழுவினர். எஞ்சிய 6 பேர் சீன இராணுவத்தினரால் சிறைபிடிக்கப் பட்டனர். அந்த 6 பேரும் ஆச்சர்யம் அளிக்கும் வகையில் சிறையிலிருந்து தப்பி இந்தியாவிற்கு வந்து சேர்ந்தனர். Major shaitan singhஇன் உடல் கையில் துப்பாக்கியை இறுக்கிப் பிடித்தபடி மலைப்பகுதிகளில் கண்டெடுக்கப்பட்டது.
இன்று 2016 கணக்கெடுப்பின் படி, தப்பித்த அந்த 6 வீரர்களில் 4 பேர் மட்டும் உயிருடன் இருக்கின்றனர். அந்த நால்வரில் ஒருவரான கேப்டன் ராம்சந்தர், "போரில் நடந்த வீரச்சம்பவங்களை மக்களிடம் கூறவே ஆண்டவன் என்னை உயிரோடு விட்டுவத்தான் என நம்புகிறேன்" என்று பேட்டி கொடுத்துள்ளார்.
ஒரு கிராமத்தைக் காக்க தனது இறுதி மூச்சு வரை போராடிய 114 பேரின் தியாகமும் வீரமும், வரலாற்றில் "The Greatest Last Stands in the History" என்று பொறிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.
இந்திய அரசு, போரைத் தலைமை ஏற்று நடத்திய Major Shaitan Singhகிற்கு 'Param Vir Chakra' விருதையும், Captain Ramchandar உட்பட 5 பேருக்கு 'Vir Chakra' விருதையும், மேலும் 4 பேருக்கு Sena Medals ஐயும் அறிவித்து கௌரவித்தது.
